John's journey began in the most unlikely of places – communist Cuba, where he was born. It was there that the seeds of his passion for self-defense were first planted, as he witnessed firsthand the importance of being able to protect oneself and one's loved ones.

At the tender age of 10, John's family made the courageous decision to leave their homeland behind and start anew in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago. It was in this new environment that John's love for martial arts truly blossomed. He immersed himself in the study of karate, eventually earning the coveted rank of black belt and competing at the highest levels of the United States Karate Association, where he ranked in the top 10 for three consecutive years.

But John's thirst for knowledge and self-improvement knew no bounds. After achieving success in the world of martial arts, he set his sights on a new frontier – firearms. Recognizing the importance of responsible gun ownership and the invaluable role firearms play in personal protection, John dedicated himself to undergoing extensive training and education.

His passion for teaching and sharing his knowledge led him to become a USCCA Certified Instructor, allowing him to impart invaluable lessons of firearms safety and self-defense to others. What began as classes in his own home quickly outgrew its confines, and in June of 2022, John's dream became a reality with the opening of Lightning Defense Academy's storefront in Crystal Lake, Illinois.
